Harley Davidson riders invaded Nusa Penida — but it was all in a good cause. They were there to hand over money to help with temple works at Majapahit on Nusa Ceningan and assist schools on Penida itself.
Thirty bikers, members of the Bali chapter of HOG bikers and other clubs including the Raskal Riders, HDCI, Goldwod and SOG made the trip from the Kuta offices of PT Harley Davidson Bali the Saturday before last, riding to Padang Bai and taking the ferry there to Nusa Penida.
The Ceningan temple project received Rp18 million (US$2,000). The money was handed over by Bali HOG chapter president AA Ketut Arimbawa.
On Sunday they visited the primary school at Sekartaji, at the southern tip of Nusa Penida, to deliver stationery supplies, school bags for students and 13 jackets for teachers at the school.
“We are very grateful to the Bali Chapter of HOG which has been caring for the children here,” said I Wayan Sudiama, deputy headmaster.
The school committee said it was grateful to the clubs and riders for their assistance.
Meanwhile, a Nusa Penida legislator in the Klungkung assembly, Wayan Misna, says government poverty-reduction plans for Penida are largely symbolic rather than practical.
He was joined in his criticism, voiced on Monday, by other legislators of Nusa Penida origin, who said more was needed than simply occasional headline events or even declaration of marine conservation zones.
